About Housing Associations

Yorkshire Coast Homes is a charitable organisation known as a Housing Association. In 2003 tenants of Scarborough Borough Council took the decision to transfer from the Local Authority to this new independent organisation. In doing so the long term future of these properties could be decided and a full investment program initiated to bring the homes up to the Government’s Decent Homes Standard.

As independent organisations Housing Associations are more customer focused, operating on a “not for profit” basis. This means that any funds generated by the rent that is charged go on running costs of the organisation within any surplus ploughed back into the properties and communities in which they operate.

Housing Associations operate under the guidance of the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Housing Corporation and also through inspections conducted by the Audit Commission. These agencies monitor performance and depending on how successful an association is provide funds to improve services to the existing housing stock; and to also build new homes. Click here to download a copy of the Housing Corporation document "A Charter for housing association applicants and residents", this will tell you what services you can expect to recieve from your housing association and also what you can do if you think that the association isn't honouring the charter.
