You Said... We Did

Occasionally YCH may contact members of our "Consultation Database" or the wider tenant population to seek their views on a number of different topics. We will do this in a variety of ways including via the Coasttalk Magazine, contacting members of our "Consultation Database", or by holding public meetings or drop in sessions where people can pop in and tell us what they think.

Previously we have sought tenants views on:

Kitchens and Bathrooms - Should we complete them in one go, or separately? Tenants told us they wanted them completed at the same time.  The programme of works has been designed in line with this feedback.

Environmental Improvement Budget - We asked tenants how the budget should be allocated and what environmental improvements the budget should be spent on to benefit the local environment. Tenants told us how they wanted the money splitting across the Borough, and that security and safety were issues that were most important to them. We have since drawn up plans to fit security lights to properties as part of the Kitchen and Bathroom improvement programme.  We are also working with the Council and local residents to design schemes in the Castle Ward and the Church Street area of Whitby, two areas which were identified as requiring essential works.

Financial Inclusion Strategy - In 2007 we looked at launching a new strategy which encourages the Financial Inclusion of our customers.  To gain a broad range of views on this new strategy we asked 15% of the members of our 'Consultation Database' for their opinions. The strategy looks at helping individuals access mainstream financial services and improving the services that are available to the benefit of the local community.  This was well received by tenants and the strategy was implemented shortly after the consultation.

Corporate Plan - The Corporate Plan, which details what our priorities are for the next few years was subject to consultation in 2007.  The views of our tenants and leaseholders were sought in relation to what they saw as the priorities in the services that YCH provides. The feedback received suggested that tenants were happy with the level of service received, and the variety of services offered, but also told us that there is a shortage of affordable housing in the Borough, and that this was something YCH should look at tackling in the future.

Handyman - Following the transfer from Scarborough Borough Council we have sought views on the introduction of a Handyman service.  This service would offer customers the chance to have little jobs carried out, which are not the responsibility of YCH, for a nominal fee. Customers told us that you would be interested in seeing the service introduced. We are currently exploring ways to make this happen.

Rural Central Heating - Recently we have asked our tenants in the rural communities who do not have mains gas supplied to their properties if they would like to opt for a green alternative, and how they viewed this option.  Following a positive response from tenants we are now fitting alternative heating in several homes within rural communities.

Charitable Status ConsultationIn late 2003 and early 2004 customer’s views were sought on if YCH should apply for charitable status. The reason for considering this would allow for YCH to apply for additional grant funding, and provide additional tax benefits attributable to charities.

A series of consultations, starting with a postal survey were held where an overwhelming majority of 94.7% supported the application. Following this meetings were held with tenants and residents of the borough, and a phone line set up to record any additional responses that were received. The feedback mirrored that of the postal consultations, and YCH was subsequently successful in achieving charitable status.
