Aids & Adaptations

Yorkshire Coast Homes is committed to excellent customer care. We aim to be flexible and shape our services to the different needs of our customers. We will also provide a responsive service to customers who are or become vulnerable, or who have special needs.

As part of our on-going commitment to enabling people to live independently, YCH can carry out alterations to meet your specific needs. If you, or someone else in your home are having difficulty getting about because of a disability, YCH may be able to arrange and fund the necessary adaptations. The application process works as follows:

1. Contact our Customer Services Team on 0845 065 56 56 who will discuss the options available to you; or contact North Yorkshire County Council on 0845 034 9410 (Adult & Community Services).

2. If applicable, it may be necessary for an Occupational Therapist to carry out an assessment to determine the best adaptation to suit your needs. YCH will contact Adult & Community Services who will, in turn, contact you to arrange a suitable time to carry out this assessment.

3. YCH operates its adaptations process based on three different categories; Minor, Standard and Major.

Minor works are deemed to be adaptations which cost not in excess of £1000. In most cases we will utilise our Handyman Service to carry out the works. We aim to complete minor adaptations within 14 days.

Minor works include:

• Grab rails
• Hand rails
• Key safes
• Additional banister rails
• Shower chairs
• Lever taps
• Minor bathroom adaptations
• Other works costing, in total, no more than £1000

Standard works relate to larger, more complex adaptations. These works are subject to a means test carried out by YCH to determine whether a contribution is required. We aim to complete these works within 28 days.

Standard works include:

• Over bath showers
• Low level access shower tray
• Ramped access
• Stairlifts
• Door widening

Major works relate to the largest of adaptations that exceed our financial limit. YCH cannot fund these works and must pass them to the Scarborough Borough Home Improvement Agency (HIA) for processing as part of a grant application (Disabled Facilities Grant). These works commonly take longer to process and complete.

Major works:

• Wet floor showers
• Curved stairlifts
• Through-floor lifts
• Extensions
• Major structural works and landscaping

 4. Upon receipt of a valid Occupational Therapist recommendation (if applicable), the works are arranged and carried if funded by YCH. If in excess of our financial limit, the works will be passed to the HIA who will contact you in due course.

5. After the works are completed YCH will send out a satisfaction survey to help us better understand the level of customer service we are providing, and the suitability of the adaptation(s) installed.

6. YCH will maintain any adaptations installed and renew items at the end of their useable life if still required (subject to an Occupational Therapist assessment, if applicable).

Please be aware that this process can take some time depending on the level and quantity of work required.

For any enquiries in relation to our Aids and Adaptations service, please contact our Customer Services Team on 0845 065 56 56 who will be happy to answer any questions you may have, or contact the Adult & Community Services on your behalf.
