Right To Repair
The Right to Repair scheme was introduced in April 1994 to all council and housing association tenants. The scheme is in place to ensure that all repairs that are detrimental to your health and cost £250 or less will be completed quickly and easily in a time frame set by the law.
Some of the repairs covered by the scheme are:
• Gas leaks
• Electrical fittings in contact with water
• Bare electrical wiring
• Overflowing sewage
• Broken external doors
• Burst pipes
• Burst storage tanks
• Electricity cuts
• No heating in severe weather
• Problems with electrical fittings
• Problems with electrical heating systems
• Problems heating water
• Ball valve faults
• Leaking pipes
• Problems with your flue
• Blocked sewers or drains
• Leaking doors or windows
• Leaking roof
• Loose or broken banisters or handrails
Depending on the repair, Yorkshire Coast Homes may need to send someone to your home to look at the problem first. If the repair qualifies for the Right to Repair scheme we will inform the contractor that the repair will be need to be done in the set time. The contractor will then contact you to arrange an appointment; you should let them know the best time for you to make sure that someone will be at home to let them in.
If the repair isn’t done in time you can ask Yorkshire Coast Homes to arrange for a second contractor to do the work, the second contractor will have the same amount of time in which to complete the work. If the repair still isn’t done in time you are entitled to compensation, the most compensation you can receive from one job is £50.
