Yorkshire Coast Homes (YCH) is running a campaign over the festive period to encourage tenants to pay their ‘Rent First’ and prioritise bills at Christmas.
As a social landlord, we are aware that we have certain responsibilities and obligations to our tenants and in return, our tenants have responsibilities to YCH.
The first priority needs to be the payment of rent, as this is the only income we receive to enable us to repair properties, run services, and be able to offer community involvement work and activities. With this in mind we are adopting a ‘Rent First’ approach to ensure that staff and tenants all understand that rent payment should be a priority for everyone. The collection of rent arrears needs to be pursued in a firm but fair way, but with the understanding that we only take legal action as a last resort.

‘We know that Christmas can be a difficult time of year when it comes to managing money so the Rent First campaign is being used to highlight that paying rent should still be a main priority over other expenses. We offer a range of payment methods, and further information and advice can be found on our website. Our Housing neighbourhood teams are available for our customer to discuss their rent payment and we have a dedicated Money Management team in place to help people, so we are urging tenants to get in touch with us if they are at all worried about their finances.’
We have already begin making changes in our approach, but one thing that will never change is our willingness to support tenants through difficult times.
